 -----------------------------------------------------------------------“
Today would be the end of this, he thought.
He was going to make it.
No more taking chances.
Today or never.
If he didn’t get his wish today he would never have it in his lifetime, and that would be a life sentence for him..
“priya..priya..priya” he was chanting feverishly..

Day 3: 10.30 AM

“Saar, he is here “, writer shanmugam gave a half salute as he announced his visitor. Muthu looked up from his table.

“Hm, Let him in.”

“Paval, your boy friend is coming. Do you need to freshen up?”.Paval threw a crunched ball of paper at him. Muthu ducked and then straightened up.

“Yes, come in”

“Hello Mr. Rajesh come in, please take your seat. So how is your day?”He leaned back on his chair relaxed.

“So far good” Rajesh looked deranged but smiled at Muthu nevertheless.

“May I know the reason, I am called here for?”

Muthu scanned the man before him with his laser eyes for a few seconds before he asked“Tell me Rajesh. where were you on those two nights?. Come on, no more hide and seek.”

Rajesh was silent.

“O…k, I take that as a pass, so next question. Why did you lie to us, that you rented an artist to do the painting?. You really thought we would be mislead if you gave an imaginary artist with a floating life story.?”

Rajesh dropped his eyes.

“next. Where is Nandhan?”

Rajesh bolted up at this one.”Sir, how do I know..?”

“So you now ready to answer the first two questions, right?”Rajesh was still silent.

Muthu took a deep breath ”Listen Rajesh, we know you are an amateur artist. The painting of a girl bathing in the pond which is hanging in your hall carries an intial. R.V. Isn’t that you?. You are an artist with an anonymous digital gallery floating in the internet. You thought we are all fools with no up to date technical knowledge to trace that out. didn’t you?”

“It’s not like that Mr.Muthu. I never thought you would take me into serious consideration.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t do anything”

“Oh! for god’s sake, please stop it and come to sense Rajesh. You liked priya, proposed her and got rejected. Only then you knew from Nandhan that they both were in love. So what did you do? You planned the operation and executed it.

You were supposed to go for the seminar in Bangalore but you didn’t go, neither did nandhan. His friends claim that you took him to the airport that night and that was the last time anybody saw him. We haven’t got news on him yet.

Your colony sentry personal had registered your number plates twice last two nights. Out: 1.30 AM and In: 6.30 AM on both nights. And… You are a huge fan of medical fiction novels. Do you want more?”

Rajesh started sobbing.

Muthu signaled paval and she went out. When she came back she had two disposable cups of water.

“ we don’t have strawberry juice” he gestured towards the water filled cup.

Rajesh took it with both hands and drank it obediently. He wiped his mouth and eyes with the back of his hands and stared at Muthu. He looked very different now, paval thought.

“sir, I never thought my activities would put me into such trouble. Swear on my mother, I didn’t do it sir. But I will tell about my ..little secret. That will help you understand me better”

“I..I have a thing for women. I go out and bring them home sometimes. I also go out partying very often. I am in a very decent circle of very highly thought of surgeons and doctors, where strip clubs and partying is not a normal behavior of a neuro surgeon. My job is my life and I love it. Everyone thinks very high of me and I don’t want anything to destroy my name or reputation.

So I had to keep my interests discreet.

Even my parents who are in the US right now don’t know about it. That’s also the reason I haven’t married yet. I asked priya in hand with all my heart, believing that I could change myself after marriage. But I really didn’t bother when she rejected me.

Actually I was happy to learn that Nandhan and priya were in love. In fact I pestered him to give me a treat. All four of us went out to eat last weekend in “dindikul venu biriyani”. You can check on that. Yes I dropped nandhan at the airport the other day but that’s all I know. I don’t know why you are interested about my reading habits. If you are thinking of illegal sexual activities and books, sorry I am not a maniac.

My literature stops with novels. Those nights I had been to *****, the five star hotel where I usually go. I try to keep it in closed circuit. Sir I might be a womanizer but not a pshycopath certainly not a murderer. That’s all. I have nothing more to hide.”He said it in a flow without looking up. He looked and sounded terribly embarrased.

Muthu was silent for a long moment and then exhaled deeply. “Ok, Rajesh you may go for the moment. But don’t go out of station ok?”

“You..you are leaving me?”

“for now yes. Please ..”

“Thank you officer” he stammered for some time and started out.

“Oh rajesh one more question. You said all four of us went out. Who was the fourth?”

“Dr.Anu, priya’s friend. She is the only other person who knew about them.”

“I heard that anu was in love with Nandhan, is it true?”Muthu asked.

“Is it? I didn’t know?”Rajesh was genuinely surprised.

“Ok..you may go” Muthu turned towards paval.

“I pity you my dear”he chuckled. Paval was tired of glaring and giving angry looks at him. She just sniffed and ignored his comment.

"You sure we can leave him out of the list boss.?"Paval asked doubtfully.

"Who said anything about that? I just left him to vent out. We cannot and should not rule him out. Not yet. We will have him in hold. But personally, i don't see any harm in this guy. What say Miss. Marple?"

"I told you that the very first day, Boss"

Muthu smiled and continued“We are yet to check the library thing. And I need to contact R3 inspector if he got anything on nandhan.”

“Boss, Did they check whether he missed the flight?”paval asked him.

“Thats the next thing i would do.But, we can't hope they have a SI as bright as mine." He winked at her and continued "I have already suggested that to the inspector he said he will look into it."he assured her smilingly.

"He might have questioned the auto drivers and taxi drivers.”he added.

“What if he took a cab to Bangalore and met with some accident”.

“What a good thought. If in that case the taxi company would have been informed and through the registration they would have traced him” He said

"Ok boss. But what if he didn't take one of those prepaid taxis but instead took a cab which came in to drop someone? The ones owned by a single person, driver/owner sorts and went straight to bangalore.?"

Muthu stared at her."Or what if he took such normal cabs and went to the bus station or train station to catch the next thing to bangalore?"

"Wow..Paval. You are good. I have asked to check the train and bus stops. But the private vehicle..good thing you got there."with that he pressed the intercom and asked veerayya to come in.

Anu was waiting in the cafeteria for whole ten minutes now. She was irritated, angry, frustrated, sad and frightened.

She saw them coming in a distance. They were walking close like a couple, laughing at each other. Anu slammed on the metal table. Few people looked at her uninterestedly.

“Hi, Anu” paval smiled at her. Anu didn’t say anything.

“What is this anu? Why such long face?. We have come to see you, won’t you even offer to buy us some drink?”muthu asked rightfully.

She swore under her breath and went to the counter. She had three diet coke tins in her hand, when she came back. She tried to open one when Muthu stopped her.

“Give that to me. You can’t drink it like that. Haven’t you heard the story of a lady who died of rat urine poisoning?” He teased and wiped the tin and the mouth of it with a tissue paper. “Here you go.”

She plucked it out of his hands spilling a little coke on the table and made a few quick gulps.

“what more do you want from me?”she asked.

“You in love?” Muthu asked softly.

Anu looked startled now.”What? N..no.who..who said that?”

“You look scared. There is nothing wrong to be in love. Is it paval?”Muthu asked without a glance.

“No, boss. Not that I know of, unless if it is a wrong kind of love”

“What is a wrong kind of love paval?”Muthu looked like he was confused.

“It’s a love you have on someone you shouldn’t love.”

“Like your friend’s lover?”

“Yeah, something like that”

“Hmm. Did you hear that anu?”Muthu asked her playfully.

“Just stop it.."She closed her ears and shut her eyes tightly. "Just stop it ok.."she repeated "It was her ok..it was her and not me.”

“She loved him even after I confided in her about my love. "

"She read all..all my unposted mails for him and she fell in love with him after knowing the good things I said about him."

"Can you imagine? She just accused me that i was the reason she fell in love with him. By talking about him all the time I made her fall in love with him. That was ridiculous.”Anu gave a shaky laugh .She was panting now. She took another long gulp from her coke tin.

“So..You killed her.?”Muthu asked in that same soft voice.

She looked at him flatly. ” You think I killed her, right?. You think I called her to the terrace early in the morning, asked her to jump into the tank with me, sliced her with a tiny blade and left her there bleeding. You think i did that, don’t you?”

“Nice details. But, What about kanagavel?” muthu sat with his chin rested on his palm.

“Oh yeah him?. I killed him because he saw me going into priya’s block in the morning. He asked me later on that. I waited for him in the motor room and sliced him too.”Anu was flaring up, paval could see that. She signaled Muthu to be cautious.

“You and your incredible imaginations.” Another gulp.

“Do you have any operations to do today?”Muthu asked her suddenly.

“what? Why?”she asked confused.

”Please don’t do it. You are not fit. Take a day off and go home.”Muthu said.

Anu stared at him and asked “can I..can I go now then?”

“Absolutely.”

Anu hesitated for a moment and then left the place. Muthu stared at her for some time and stretched an open palm towards paval. She took a clear plastic bag from her pocket and placed it on his palm.

Muthu carefully picked up the empty tin which anu had used and put it inside the bag.

”Specimen collected."

"And you prepared it fairly well boss."

"You mean, wiping it off the old prints with rat poison story?"he shrugged.
"We have to keep an eye on her though. It's too dangerous to leave her like that.. We need some solide evidence."

He looked at that plastic bag and felt confident and said " Hope we will get it soon. Shall we move?”

Day 3: 3.20 PM.

Paval wiped her mouth. Still relishing the taste of her mom’s special ‘thakkaali saatham and urulai masial’, she put herself in her seat. Muthu chose exactly that moment to enter the room, hurriedly.

"We have to go to that ******* minister’s house. Security measures.”

“You haven't had your lunch yet boss. what happened? Has there been an attack or something?”

“I'll grab something on the way and No, no attacks or anything. Just that ******* minister’s dog is missing. It seems we are needed in person. Come on hurry up”

“What about the homicide case” Paval showed the bulletin board filled with various stuff.

“We will be back in few hours.”Muthu assured her and they left together.

When they came back after two hours, the two plastic pouches and a brown cover were waiting on his table. Muthu opened the cover hungrily.

Fingerprint reports from kamal.

They had sent the disposable cup used by rajesh and the coke tin from the GH cafeteria for comparing the prints with the prints found on the paper.

And the report said, one print matched exactly.

Day 4: 6.30 AM

Priya was so dead..

Her locks of permed curls slicking to the side of her head like rolls of wet spring. The pajama suit looked clean like she just wore it from the dryer. Her body had been laid down carefully on the willowing aerial prop roots of the banyan tree.

With hands kept folded gracefully in front, she looked like a paling ‘sleeping beauty’- sliced below her ear.

The cool morning breeze slithered through the branches making a lazy noise and few dry leaves were pushed off from the branches.

They flew down in a graceful dancing motion like a rope puppet in slow motion and fell on that "beautiful corpse" like a mourning funeral flower arrangement.

Day 2: 2.30 PM

Paval looked around herself. It was beautiful. What they call the designer piece house, complete with an indoor patio pool and a small water fountain in it. This house must cost a fortune, she thought.

Muthu was enjoying the conditioned cool air from Samsung.

“Who is it muthaiya?” a voice came from inside. It seemed to be walking towards them. Paval drew a sharp breath as she took a look at him. Did priya really reject this guy? she thought.

“Hi, Can I help you?”, he asked politely.

“Hi, I am Muthu Govindan Inspector of police”

“I can see that, Hi again, I am Rajesh vaidhyanathan, you obviously know “ he shook hands with muthu, with such ease. In full formals and probably six foot nine he stood strikingly fair and handsome.

“And this is Paval, Sub inspector”.

“Hi” said paval.

“Hi, you look young to be an SI.?”He smiled and shrugged his shoulders,

”Anyways, please make yourselves comfortable.” He led them to a private hall overlooking the water fountain.

“A pretty place this is” Muthu praised.

“Yeah at a pretty cost” he said and they laughed.

“Well, since this is the first time I am having police officers at my house, What have I done?”he asked playfully.

“Did you do anything?”Muthu asked cynically.

The handsome face took a new form, a more closed in form which then
cleared in a moment to a smiling face,”I don’t get you Mr. Inspector”

“We are here, regarding a murder investigation.” Tall crystal glasses filled with bright red strawberry juice took seats at their respective coasters on the mahogany coffee table. No one took notice of it.

“Murder? what murder?”Rajesh looked like he was confused. Muthu leaned back in the leather couch comfortably and looked at the man before him.

“Do you know a woman named Priya?”

“Priya? Which priya? That’s a very generic name.”

“Wow..i thought you would jump up and sob at just hearing the name.”Muthu smiled and continued,
“ It’s ok. The priya we are talking about, is the one whom you made a painting of and proposed for marriage.”

“Oh. She..just a second, Priya is dead? Oh my goodness..oh god.”Muthu looked at him silently.

Why does he even practice medicine?, he could earn big bucks in cinema. He is such a great actor paval thought.

“so, can we restart the conversation?”Muthu asked charmingly.

“I am sorry inspector. Who..who could do such a thing?”

“Exactly our question” muthu looked straight at him.

“It didn’t go well, did it?” muthu was grinning. Paval had a grim face. When he was asked more private questions about his whereabouts and relationship with Nandhan and his disappearance, Rajesh maintained his cool like he was a perfect gentleman but gave answers which didn’t help them much.

“What is it paval? Are you angry on me because I made that handsome face scowl?”he chuckled.

“Boss, please. We are deviating.”

“No were not. This guy is a potential suspect. A fraud. He didn’t answer properly about Nandhan and Did you see the way he looked uninterested when he talked about that painting?”
"He looked very decent and nice. But seriously, who would pay an artist to paint someone he is going to propose and put his name underneath? It just made me puke.”Paval looked like she was disgusted.

“Really? “he mocked at her and then said ”oh, atleast you must appreciate him for being honest you know”.

”so, what did your instinct say about him? Did your tail tingle?”muthu laughed at his joke but paval kept quite. She certainly didn’t want to say yes.

“Well I heard that when hormones are in action instincts don’t work, is it
true?” he pulled her leg again.
She glared at him and he laughed. Within seconds he turned professional.

”We need to check on him and we need to check on that artist. Veerayya stop the car” suddenly he barked.

“what is it boss?”

Muthu showed her the lonely man walking in the deserted street with a wire basket in hand. “isn’t that the cook who brought us juice.? We didn’t thank him paval” he said and Paval smiled and said “you are always right boss”.

“Hello muthaiyan.”Muthu went before him.

“Hi..what.what is it.?”

“The juice was excellent”

“Thank you” he started walking.”No please wait, we need to ask you something.”

“what is it sir? I know nothing”

“I haven’t asked you anthing yet”.

“what is it sir?”

“where was your boss, the night before last?”

“at..at home sir”

“Really muthaiyan?. How many years for helping a murder crime paval?” he asked paval without taking his eyes off the old man.

“My boss is not a murderer. He might be anything but not murderer.”

“what anything?”muthu moved in closer.

“Nothing. You want to pull words from my mouth. There is nothing wrong with him. I will swear on myself that he was at home last night and the night
before that”

“last night?” muthu asked immediately.

“what? You said ..”muthaiya looked confused.

“I only asked where he was the night before last night.”Muthu’s voice chilled his core. Muthaiya looked speechless.

“That was fun.” Muthu leaned back on his seat. Paval gave him a sidewise glance.

“So, this rajesh has motive, ability and no alibi, though his cook would swear for him. And he knows the apartment very well. What do you think?”he turned towards paval.

“What do ‘you’ think sir?”she retorted back.

”Why?”

“No tell me, seriously” she poked him again. Muthu fell silent for a moment and then said.

“He is a potential suspect but”

“But?”

“I was just thinking of that piece of paper from kanagavel’s hand..”muthu said thoughtfully. Paval smiled knowingly.

”Go to the Forensic house veerayya. Let us see what they got on that paper.” he said. In a few minutes they crossed the jammed roads of mylapore. The forensic house sat silently waiting for them, so did kamal, the scientific assistant.

“Yes kamal, any help from your side.?”Muthu asked him impatiently.

“First of all, crime scene – clean.
The paper was an old, to be precise ten years old, the .”
“oh kamal “

“ok..It had a few prints in it , of which we could match one, with the prints taken from the specimen, kanagavel. We also had few semi prints which we tried with our new method, where we do the ridge counts and density measure of the upper radial curve of the”

“Kamal….”Muthu chided.

“Sorry, I just get carried away sometimes. Well, we tried our new method and we can say with 99% assurance that we have two partial finger prints apart from the specimen named kanagavel and they are one female and one male.”

Muthu stared him hard.”Do you mean to say that you can determine sex from fingerprints?”

“yep. That’s just what I said. And believe me we do this without any sleek, posh equipments imported from somewhere. Mind power Muthu..”he smiled.

”yeah yeah”. Muthu hurriedly escaped from him with that crunched piece of paper in a zip lock pouch and the report.

Day 2 : 4.30 PM

Paval and Muthu were having tea in the station.

The table in his room looked like a collage made of crime scene pictures, statements documents and reports. Muthu sat at the corner of his table with small disposable tea cup in one hand and marker in another. He was worried that they hadn’t been able to trace out nandhan still.
Paval was examining the crunched paper with a magnifying glass.

“Boss, it is a novel”

“How do you say.?”

“The words in it. It’s the last part of first five lines of a right side page. The first line has ‘ you have a choice:either’ , the second line says ’take your pick, Dr.’ the third line goes ‘known prenatal test’ and last some ‘lus biopsy’”.

“could be a medical fiction. Just check whether you have a fine print over the top corner with author’s name or book name”

“it’s torn sir,I’ll try mm.. it’s a ‘b’ or ‘t’ and then a space. A ‘c’ and then a big gap”

“what?”

“ It’s torn on that spot.” Muthu thought for a moment and said “Just turn that paper. you must see the book name.”

“What?”

“Yeah, normally if they put author name in the right top they will have the book name in the next left top.”

Paval turned over the paper and smiled at him triumphantly. “boss you are a genius”

“It says‘Muta’. That’s all we have.”

"Up..up.. scoot"
“Go and google medical fictions with starting letter ‘Muta’”.Muthu ordered paval.
She ran across to her table and quickly typed along the necessary keywords in google search bar in her computer.

“It’s Mutation- by” Paval announced exitedly and stopped looked at him and said, ”Robin cook”. She rechecked again with the text in the paper and confirmed it.”

“Hmm.. someone’s favorite author, I presume ”.Muthu said bemusedly.
"And sir, there is a small smudge of blue"she examined more closely and said,"Looks like ..from a stamp pad ink."
"which means?"muthu's eyes twinked in pleasure and anticipation.
"Rental library?"
"you got it. one more clue" He closed one eye, aimed and threw his crushed papercup into the dustbin in far corner.

“Good” he jumped down from the table and went to the board now.

Victim 1: he wrote on the white board
Priya.

He wrote the suspects names around her in a circle and added lines connecting them to priya.

Anu, he boxed and noted on the side
alibi no motive strong ability yes evidence- ?(we are getting there)he thought.
He stared at the name for some time.

“You are staring even at her name?”paval teased him from behind. Muthu smiled and continued boxing another name.

Nandhan:
alibi no motive yes ability yes. Evidence :?
He stopped for a moment and in a flourish he boxed another name

Rajesh:
alibi no motive strong ability yes. Evidence:?
" The evidence we have right now is that piece of paper and the prints in it.
It will hold good for all three suspects and anyone else new for that matter.
we need to dig deep into this one. "

"Let us call Anu and Rajesh tomorrow for a formal enquiry to the station. We might get something new. And we also have to check on the nearest libraries to the apartment. we might just get lucky."
He then went to the board again and wrote
" Victim 2: kanagavel "near priya and looked from a step back.

“What do you think paval.?”

She kept silent. Without looking back he drew another box near rajesh in the suspect circle and wrote down 'X' in it.

She felt the chill.

S***..s***..he missed again. Last time he was sure he could pull her to him through a call. But he didn’t expect the other one to attend the phone. It was a mistake alright. But this time he had planned so perfectly. Almost too perfect. How could that go wrong?. Why didn’t she come? He was breathing too fast, thinking too hard. In desperation he did try other options, but too many disturbances. Still he escaped didn’t he? Well at least he is getting good at that. He smiled to himself and fell on his bed, his eyes closing slowly like a theatre curtain.” Oh priya..” he uttered silently

Day 2: 7.30 AM

The usually bright morning looked sober and tired today with grey clouds hanging here and there.

Arumugam was shivering with fear. He didn’t expect his first day would start like this. Arumugam had joined the duty today as told by the president of the association. The day shift security had suddenly resigned few days ago, so he was selected for this job in a hurry. He was happy that he didn't have to ask his daughter in law for paisa. She won’t hurt him with words any more he thought. But, all his cheerfulness and his diligent enthusiasm on his work drained like a broken water pipe on his very first day. Nothing but fear gripped him tight right now.

He had come sharp at 6.30 and waited by the cabin for the association president’s arrival. Secretary jagannathan and president Venugopal arrived five minutes late.

“mm. What Arumugam? Ready for your duty?”

“Yes sir” he gave a stiff salute.

“you can save that for the future. I hope this dedication lasts till you are here. Well come on let’s start with your first duty. These are tough days here. Have you heard of the murder that happened here last night.? Well be careful. That’s all we ask.”Venugopal had his authoritarian manners and perfectness in following principles which always landed him the president post.
With head tilted up he went first, followed by jagannathan and the new security. They reached the motor room nestled on the backside of the complex near a huge banyan tree.

Look Arumugam, this is the motor room, Tanks in each block has different switches and you have to maintain the timings and all other things with the night duty watchman, speaking of whom where is this Kanagavel? He is nowhere to be found. Have you seen him Jagan sir? Venu gopal turned towards jagannathan”

“No sir, After cleaning the tank yesterday he went home. I saw him last when he left for home at 11.30 AM yesterday. I didn’t see him last night.”

“Well I saw him last night. But where is he now?”

“He didn’t even switch on the motors today sir. Only I came to switch it on you see. “Jagan boasted his dutifulness.

“Well, we will look into that later. Right now..”Venu gopal froze in midsentence.

“What in God’s name is that?”He pointed a shaky finger at something dark sticking out from behind the big, bulky generator. Only now did they smell the faint murky odor of metal. Or what is it?

Paval thought what had happened that morning. As soon as the call had come, Paval came down to the apartment with veerayya and Muthu came in, a few minutes late. He looked tired. Another night patrol.

“what happened?”muthu had asked jogging towards the motor room along with her.

“It’s Kanagavel, found behind the generator in the motor room” Paval looked at him meaningfully.

“I knew it” Muthu swore under his breath. “I should have drilled him yesterday”.

“You think he would have shared some secret with the killer?”Paval had asked.

“No, Paval. I think he had sensed something and he got closer to the killer, than us. But the killer was faster than him. Is he dead?” Muthu asked.

“Yes, same style, but this time smaller cut. Just about an inch.”

“You examined it , by yourself?”Muthu stopped . He looked surprised.

“Yes sir, I had to make myself comfortable about such stuff, right?”

“Right. Where did you vomit later?”He asked as a matter of fact. Paval stared him hard and said “Association President’s house toilet”.

“Good. Now let’s get started.”They came near the motor room now. It was crowded on the outside. Everyone looked like they were a part of a horror or thriller movie now. Talking animatedly within themselves.

“Well if you all could share your knowledge with same enthusiasm to us, it will be helpful he spoke to the crowd and scanned it with his laser eyes. In a few minutes the place looked deserted, save for the president, secretary and treasurer.
The body had been removed from inside to a cement platform outside for examination. The small room was occupied by two forensic people and a constable. Muthu examined the room. The backside of the generator bathed in blood.

Outside Kanagavel stared the sky. Muthu stared at him for a long time and his eyes flashed lightning for a moment.

“Who saw this?”Muthu was amazed at how many times he had asked this same question in these two days.

“Sir, we came to show around…”while Venugopal was talking to Muthu, paval looked around.

Paval was confused. Her heart was beating fast. She had something at the back of her mind, which her instinct said was important. But she couldn’t put her finger on it. It was the same feeling she got when she was scanning the crime scene pictures the other day. What is it?
She sharpened her vision and shot it around her. The four blocks of the complex were neatly arranged in a square .A small landscape made of mostly hibiscus shrubs and some crotons and money plants filled the centre gap between the blocks which circled around a paved stone platform with cement benches around it’s perimeter.
A beautiful looking black stone thiru magal statue stared back at her from the small shrine in the exact centre of the platform.
Paval’s eyes wandered a bit higher. Her mind was looking for logic, again and again and again. Suddenly like a flash something sharp came into her view.

Muthu joined her.He followed her gaze. “Is she mourning for today or yesterday?”He asked. There in a balcony stood Anu in a stark black salwar looking at them.

“Boss, leave her alone will you?”Paval begged.

“what?, she is a bloody suspect. Oops! sorry for my language. But, Paval you need to focus your thoughts. This is not the time for favoritism. ok?” With that he walked towards the ambulance. What could paval tell him now?
Could she tell him that it was not favoritism but instinct?. She drew a big breath and walked towards him.

The body was being lifted into the van. Jaganathan looked pale, like he was painted with poster color.

“How did you miss that Mr.Jagan?”Muthu bore into his eyes with his.

“sir, seriously I didn’t see it. It was relatively dark when I went to switch it on. I came out as soon as I did.I really didn’t see it sir”.
Jagannathan was shaking all over. He was pleading with his eyes.
Jagannathan thought of it again. Malathi was screaming at him as usual and this time for water. She seemed to have totally forgotten about the recent incident. He was swearing all the way to the motor room and on his way back. He never gave as much thought to look around in the motor room. No smell or sound came either.

Kanagavel looked fresh like priya but not pretty like her. His face looked like he was shocked.

Paval’s mind was racing. Another fast attack. She simulated the scene in her mind.

Kanagavel entered the motor room. It was still dark outside with a streak of dark blue. The chilly breeze left him once he entered the room. He must have felt warm. But he didn’t. It was a weird chill inside the room. He sensed something and turned around the corner behind the generator.

“You? What are you..?”In midsentence a hand shot up and sliced him below the ear. Just moments, for him to look shocked and lock his eyes to his killer’s. What did it look like? “

“Paval..paval..”Muthu shook her.

“Sorry boss, I was just thinking.”Now she got the strong sensation that he was close by. Yes she was positive it was a man.

“Come on, Let’s go talk to people...”muthu pulled her along.

It was stretching like an old rubber band, thought muthu. He knew that he was going in a wrong direction but didn’t know another way until now (if he got lucky). Besides he believes in following the suspects and evidence rather than following instinct. In most cases it brought out the truth even if it took some time. Sometimes instincts let you down but proper investigation never let you down.

He thought of Paval. She does have a quick eye and good instincts, let’s see if that helps in this case, he thought.

Paval was looking at the buildings when Muthu called her “come on we have so much work.”

They stood near a table in the verandah while people came to them for questioning. They had questioned more than a dozen people now including the milkman and the paperboy. Treasurer sundaram’s house had the closest view from the motor room with a window overlooking the banyan tree. Sundaram was a balding old man with kids living in US. He was of no use to the investigation either.

They went to priya’s house again. The house was filled with rose petals that were strewn all over the hall which a maid was brooming. Few relatives were still there.

“hello sir” Muthu greeted priya’s father. The funeral was over and house looked dead as well.

“I am sorry but we have our duties ”

“Please go ahead inspector.”He sat down pulling his ‘thundu’ over his bare shoulder.

“Did kanagavel talk to you yesterday?”

“No sir, I didn’t see him much”

“Hmm. Do you know anyone by the name Nandhan?”

“Who? you mean anu’s friend Dr. Nandhan?”Muthu and Paval exchanged looks.

“yes sir, the same man.”

“Anu introduced him to us and priya. He seemed to be a nice guy why?”

“Anu says he and your daughter priya were in love”

“What? That’s nonsense. I mean he never came to see priya here. We thought anu and he was in love. We didn’t ask though. Oh god is that why he killed my daughter?”

“No..no sir, please don’t jump into conclusions we were just asking you for information.”

“If he had , find him and put him in jail forever please.”He started sobbing. Muthu patted on his shoulder. He knew he cannot get anything from him rightnow.

“Who did this?”Paval asked suddenly. She was standing near a painting. It was priya. An oil on canvas priya. She looked pretty in that too.

“Oh that. I forgot about him. That was given by a gentleman as a present on priya’s last birthday. Her last birthday”

“who gave it sir?”

“A guy named Rajesh, oh now I remember he was introduced by Nandhan to us. I am a Neurologist, so Nandhan introduced him like that. A week later rajesh came home alone and presented this painting and said it was a belated birthday gift. He also asked for priya in hand.”

“what?”

“yes, he approached me straight. He had not even uttered a word to priya till then.”he said proudly.

“what happened?”paval was anxious.

“Priya said, no Iam sorry straight to his face. And he was such a gentle man. He looked sad but he said, I thought I would be happy if she became my wife. it’s ok sir, I am not a type who would fall sick in failures. No hard feelings. We are still friends.”

“That is what he said? One who made a real looking painting of a woman whom he met just a week ago and over a heartbreak he said, it’s alright I can live with it?” Muthu asked himself.

“Do you have his address sir?”

“Yes, he gave his card”, he went in and came back with a professional looking business card.

“It said Rajesh M.D, Neuro surgeon.”

“He is a doctor?”

“yes , a surgeon at this very young age. “

Nice, thought Muthu.

Anu came near the jeep. She looked tired and worried. “you wanted to talk to me?” she asked.

“Hello, Ms.Anu. Yes, I am dying to talk to you” Muthu said smilingly.
Anu showed no emotions ”Oh”.

“So, tell me Anu, when did you wake up today.?”

“When I am home, it’s my practice to rise at sunrise.”she said

“When did you wake up today?” Muthu asked again.

“Somewhere around 5.00 5.30.”

“5.00 or 5.30?”

“I don’t see a clock as soon as I get up. I get up by habit ok?”

“Well, what did you do as soon as you got up?”

“I brushed my teeth and came out to the balcony to read.”

“Read what?”

“A Novel”she said.

“What novel?”

“Toxin – by robin cook, a medical fiction”

“That would be your room right?”Muthu pointed to a fifth floor corner
balcony in block B.

Anu raised a surprised brow.”yes”she said.

“It has a good view of the garden and the path that leads to the motor room. Sure, You didn’t see anyone going that way.?”

“I was absorbed in my book. Besides if someone did go through the car parking and behind the banyan tree to the room, nobody could have seen him”

“him?”Muthu was fast.

“It..It should be a guy. The murders are ruthless. No woman can do such things.”

“Oh come on doctor, when women can even perform autopsies..”

“That is different Mr.Muthu” Anu’s voice was flaring anger. Muthu took a step back. “wow..you get angry so quickly”.

“And you accuse so quickly”

“Easy now Ms.Anu. I was just quoting an example. Well, it’s good you have a perception. Do you have any suspicions?”

“Have you checked on Nandhan yet?”anu answered him with a question.

“Funny though, Nandhan is not found anywhere. A formal complaint had been made already by his parents. Did you happen to talk to him?”
Anu glared at him again.”I wouldn’t have asked you if I had” She spat back.

"Do you know a guy named Rajesh?"

"No, why?"

"Nothing"

”Is that all? can I go?”

“For now” Paval interjected and smiled at her.

“What ? you are playing the good cop now?”Anu looked furious.

“No anu. Just go and take rest” Paval said “until we call you again”Muthu added for which anu shot an angry glance and stomped out of there.

“I like this woman when she is angry, better” Muthu chuckled, Paval glared .

Day 2: 10.30 AM

Paval and Muthu were seated in that dull looking local restaurant eating their dosas out of plantain leaves.

“what next boss?”

“We need to change the whole damn thing. New suspect list and everything. Right now Anu tops the list followed by Nandhan and then our new addition Mr.Rajesh. He might glide up the ladder. Let us see. We might have to recheck the colleagues list again. Might even make a stop at the hospital oncemore.”

“How come this killer doesn’t leave any evidence.?”

“Well, this time though he did.”

“what?”

“Yeah, look at this” Muthu brought out a crushed piece of paper kept inside a clear plastic bag from inside his pocket.

“Wow what is that?”

“Kanagavel, had it clutched in his hand.”

“How come?”

“Like this” he showed her, “No how come I missed it?”she asked.

“You must have been disturbed by the looks first. Come on this is your first time and believe me you handled it fairly well. Now to look at this thing. What does it look like?”

“I think it’s an edge of a paper. "she suggested.

" A Book perhaps. Yellowed paper with small prints. Could be a novel or something.”Muthu was making deductions keenly while paval felt strange
coldness covering her.

She felt that same feeling.

“Boss,..”

“Boss, shall we leave?”

“what ? what happened.?”

“Nothing I just am not feeling good right now.” paval said.

“Hmm, maybe I reminded you of that body. Ok “he said and they rose.

While Muthu was paying the bill, Paval tried hard not to look around. She knew he was there. Menacingly near. And she didn’t want to show him that she sensed him. She felt him challenging her. Look I am here and you cannot catch me. Her breath got faster.
We will catch you..We will catch you ..you psycho she swore to herself.

Day 1: 5.30 PM, GH

Hi. I am Muthu govindan, Inspector of police. This is Pavalakodi, SI.”Muthu and paval shook hands with a tall well dressed woman in her twenties.

“Hi, Iam Anu. Dr.Anu.”

“So, can we have a look at the locker ?”

“Yes, this way please.”They walked for a while.”How well do you know Priya?”

Anu was silent for a moment , then she said “I am one of her best friends. At work and at home. I live in block B.”

“Oh, You had a night shift or something?”

“I stayed back at my friend’s place and came early for an operation. I still can’t believe what has happened”.

“This is it” She showed one of the shabby looking metal lockers with its doors wide open (pried open). There were people looking into the room whispering within themselves.

“who saw it first?”

“I did. It was locked in the morning. But when I came in to change to go home, I saw it. It was like this when I came.”

“Where would the key be normally.?”

“She is a little forgetful, so she always leaves it in the draw there.”

“Whoever did this knew that it would be there. What does she have inside? any idea.?

“ She usually has a book or two of her novels and some sheets of paper. Her letters, those she doesn’t.. didn’t want anyone at home to look at.”

“Wait, Do you mean she had a lover.?”

Anu looked at him and smiled sadly. “You saw her. You tell me.”

“Yeah. Who is he?”

“He is a doctor too. He works with me.”

“Is he around now?”

“He? No sir. He went out of station.”

“when?”

“Lastnight”

“Last night?”

“That is what he said. He was to fly to Bangalore last night for a doctor’s seminar.”
“Anyone else went with him?”

“ I guess I can check that for you, if you can wait “she said and made few calls. She came in a few minutes with a phone number. “This is the number of a colleague who is attending the seminar right now. The seminar must be over for the day, we can call him.” she said.

“Please do”

“Hello arvind? Anu here. Yeah..How was the seminar. Good? Oh you have heard!. Who told you? sapna? mm. It’s hard.” fresh tears appeared from her eyes. “Listen can you do me a favor?. Can you check and tell whether Nandhan is there?”

“ You sure? oh ok.. ok arvind I will call back later. Thank you.”

“what he is not there?”

“Yes, After knowing the news during the lunch time Arvind had invariably searched for any of his colleagues to share the news. He tried to reach Nandhan. He couldn’t find him, even through phone. So he had called in the hotel where they are booked to stay whether he was in the room .”

“And they said he hadn’t even checked in, right?”

“yes.”

“I thought so. Paval make a note to call varadhan to check whether he was on the passenger list of any plane that took off last night to b’lore. And have you informed the forensic people? We might get a print” muthu followed paval’s eyes where there was a box full of surgical gloves.

“Right . No prints then. OK, Did Priya have any other male friends.?” He asked Anu.

“She had many friends but none like Nandhan. Actually nobody knows about them except me. She was planning to tell her parents about them after her internship. But Nandhan was asking her to wait until he finished his P.G. which he will join in a few months.”

"why the secrecy here?"

“Nandhan’s father is the Dean. It might get him into unnecessary trouble.”

“Any enemies for her? ”

“Priya ? She was everyone’s pet.”

“ May be that’s why she might have had some enemies. And I hope I can talk to her other colleagues here. ”

“Yes sir, we were informed of your request” Anu said deligently.

“Did she say anything about anyone recently that would be worth telling me?”

“A few nights back when we were chatting, she said she felt like someone was watching her. I joked at her that everyone was watching her. It seems like she was right. ” Anu said with heavy heart.

“Did she say who it could be?”.

“No , she just said , Anu akka I feel like someone is watching me. I get these intense feeling that someone is watching me. I get goose bumps .”

“hmm..” The mobile in his pocket called him again. “excuse me,” he said and went away with his phone.

“I am so sorry for your loss Anu,” paval took anu’s hand in hers. Anu broke down. Paval sat with her for a while holding her by the shoulder.

“I just didn’t..I just couldn’t..Oh god..i never thought I would do autopsy on my own friend.”She sobbed again helplessly.

“What did you say? Did you do her autopsy?”

“Well I assisted the senior doctor. But I cut her with a scalpel. Oh dear priya..”

“Anu, sorry but can you detail me more about the result?. It’s something to know from you. Better perception perhaps. Will you?”

Anu shook her head and sat on a chair.”It was a perfect kill”

“What do you mean perfect kill?”

“The murder happened at around 5.00AM. Just one cut. He sliced off her carotid arteries, both of them.”

“It’s something.. a blood vessel which takes blood straight from the heart to the brain. ” she explained to a confused looking paval.

“You cut that, no blood to brain. So practically brain dead, and an instant knock down. You might get really lucky and fall into a coma , but priya was not lucky. She had been left like that for quite some time. In this case, not much time is needed. When the carotid arteries are cut, You loose blood so quickly with high pressure and it is hard to stop. Every time the heart pumps, more blood will come out.”

“oh god!” paval felt sick.

“yes. She looked peaceful though, she died miserably but probably fast.”

“But we couldn’t find any cut wound. She looked perfect, kind of smiling?”

“The carotid arteries go from heart through the side of your neck , closer to your ear and up to the brain. You might have missed out the clean 2 inch sidewise cut made below her ears. And yes she might not have known what was coming, and when it did come she would have had no time to react.”

“So that clears us with one very important point. The killer must be a professional, like a doctor?”paval looked at Anu .

“Anu looked straight with eyes that were devoid of emotions and said ”Yes. The cut was clean , made by a small but very sharp blade.”

“Nothing else?”

“No she was clean. The hair strands were hers and she didn’t put up a fight.”

“I am sorry for asking but.”

“No sexual residues.” anu answered the unasked question.
“ok.”
“Who all are close to Priya here?”

“All the interns know her very well. You can talk to them in a while, when they come to collect their stuff to go home. There are about ten of them who are in her batch. seven of them are female. And she is friendly with everyone here. Even some patients call her by name. You will have to spend a week here if you are to enquire everyone who know her.”

“If that is necessary we will just do that Ms.Anu.”Muthu joined them. He looked like he was contemplating something.

“Anu I was told that you held the autopsy on Priya, is that true?”Muthu demanded.

“Yes sir”

“May I know Why?”

“Sh..she was my friend. I wanted to know what had happened to her.”
“Yes but, isn’t it difficult even for senior doctors to do an autopsy on their loved ones?”

Anu looks distressed and restless “Yes sir”

“Then why?”

Anu looked blanched and dropped her eyes.”I just wanted to be there, just an instinct.” she said meekly.

“was it hard?”Muthu asked in a husky but stern voice.

“Ofcourse it was.”Anu spat out the words indignantly. Paval looked at her boss quizzingly.

“Boss , what happened?”Paval had to jog to cope up with Muthu’s speed.

“Boss?” His serious face broke into an instant grin.

“Well I felt like I was calling my professor whenever I called you sir”

“Good, at least you feel that I am not that old.”

“Ok. Cut the crap. what happened?”

“Wow..woman I am your boss, do I need to keep it pinned on my forehead?”

“Boss, please..”

“Ok..Ok..I just went to the men’s locker room. And guess what I heard?”

“What?”

“Nandhan’s close friends swear on their stethoscope that it was Anu who was or is in love with Nandhan. And we couldn’t reach nandhan though.”

“What?”

“Yep, nobody believes the story of Nandhan – priya. They say they were just friends. The best part is, It was priya who came as the mediator.”

“Oh God. My head is spinning.”Paval looked stunned.

“Then sit down. It might reel soon”

Paval just pushed herself into a nearby plastic chair. Muthu leaned on the pillar next to it.

“Want more? Anu always made sure that priya spent less time with male interns or doctors.”

“It could have been just a maternal feeling”.

“Or just simple pure jealousy.”

“You just said , they were friends. Nandhan and priya.”

“Well yes but, Nandhan has not accepted Anu’s proposal until now.”

Paval kept silent.

“well I just asked one of the doctors to help me talk to her other friends. They will be waiting for us in the canteen. Shall we go?”
Paval exhaled sharply and stood up”Yes sir”

“nope..Yes boss” Muthu winked and walked on.

“well what do you think?”Muthu and Paval were walking towards the Dean’s room now.

“I think most guys like her and girls don’t”

“Yeah, girls never like good things, it’s their nature.”Muthu tantalized her female ego.

“Yeah like men never see beyond skin. Shall we stop this and come to the point?”

“hmm. I am wondering who is the boss here” he teased again and turned serious.

”Right, so the overall conclusion is
Priya - happy go lucky girl, friendly with guys. Happy with girls . A little forgetful in nature. Serious with her studies. Did you find anyone interesting in the group. ?”

“Nope..none.”

“Who else have we got to talk to?”

“Her other friends, The patients she attended, and very importantly Mr. Nandhan.”

“Yes, I think it’s time to call varadhan and ask about nandhan” Muthu made the call and waited for few minutes for the result. He then turned to Paval and said “guess what?”

“He didn’t go to Bangalore ?”paval asked.
“Damn right.”

“That Dean was an arrogant old man. And he refuses anything between his son and priya.“Muthu said.

“Naturally, May be that’s why they didn’t tell him about them yet.” paval suggested.

“We will check out what really happened. Meanwhile why don’t you fill in the autopsy details anu had been telling you.”

Paval and Muthu went down the phenoyl stinking stairs of the GH to the parking. Little did they know that a pair of eyes was watching them.

Day 2: 8.30 AM

Paval was sipping “nayar kadai” cardamom tea. Writer shanmgam was advicing a pickpocket fellow. He was scratching his head irritatedly . Paval smiled and sipped some more tea.

“Tring..tring.”

What could make people call the police station early in the morning?, shanmugam muttered to himself and attended the phone.

“What? Again?”

“What is it annachi?”paval jumped up from her seat.

“Another homicide. Same location.”

“oh..****” Paval dialed for muthu immediately
