Day 2: 2.30 PM

Paval looked around herself. It was beautiful. What they call the designer piece house, complete with an indoor patio pool and a small water fountain in it. This house must cost a fortune, she thought.

Muthu was enjoying the conditioned cool air from Samsung.

“Who is it muthaiya?” a voice came from inside. It seemed to be walking towards them. Paval drew a sharp breath as she took a look at him. Did priya really reject this guy? she thought.

“Hi, Can I help you?”, he asked politely.

“Hi, I am Muthu Govindan Inspector of police”

“I can see that, Hi again, I am Rajesh vaidhyanathan, you obviously know “ he shook hands with muthu, with such ease. In full formals and probably six foot nine he stood strikingly fair and handsome.

“And this is Paval, Sub inspector”.

“Hi” said paval.

“Hi, you look young to be an SI.?”He smiled and shrugged his shoulders,

”Anyways, please make yourselves comfortable.” He led them to a private hall overlooking the water fountain.

“A pretty place this is” Muthu praised.

“Yeah at a pretty cost” he said and they laughed.

“Well, since this is the first time I am having police officers at my house, What have I done?”he asked playfully.

“Did you do anything?”Muthu asked cynically.

The handsome face took a new form, a more closed in form which then
cleared in a moment to a smiling face,”I don’t get you Mr. Inspector”

“We are here, regarding a murder investigation.” Tall crystal glasses filled with bright red strawberry juice took seats at their respective coasters on the mahogany coffee table. No one took notice of it.

“Murder? what murder?”Rajesh looked like he was confused. Muthu leaned back in the leather couch comfortably and looked at the man before him.

“Do you know a woman named Priya?”

“Priya? Which priya? That’s a very generic name.”

“Wow..i thought you would jump up and sob at just hearing the name.”Muthu smiled and continued,
“ It’s ok. The priya we are talking about, is the one whom you made a painting of and proposed for marriage.”

“Oh. She..just a second, Priya is dead? Oh my goodness..oh god.”Muthu looked at him silently.

Why does he even practice medicine?, he could earn big bucks in cinema. He is such a great actor paval thought.

“so, can we restart the conversation?”Muthu asked charmingly.

“I am sorry inspector. Who..who could do such a thing?”

“Exactly our question” muthu looked straight at him.

“It didn’t go well, did it?” muthu was grinning. Paval had a grim face. When he was asked more private questions about his whereabouts and relationship with Nandhan and his disappearance, Rajesh maintained his cool like he was a perfect gentleman but gave answers which didn’t help them much.

“What is it paval? Are you angry on me because I made that handsome face scowl?”he chuckled.

“Boss, please. We are deviating.”

“No were not. This guy is a potential suspect. A fraud. He didn’t answer properly about Nandhan and Did you see the way he looked uninterested when he talked about that painting?”
"He looked very decent and nice. But seriously, who would pay an artist to paint someone he is going to propose and put his name underneath? It just made me puke.”Paval looked like she was disgusted.

“Really? “he mocked at her and then said ”oh, atleast you must appreciate him for being honest you know”.

”so, what did your instinct say about him? Did your tail tingle?”muthu laughed at his joke but paval kept quite. She certainly didn’t want to say yes.

“Well I heard that when hormones are in action instincts don’t work, is it
true?” he pulled her leg again.
She glared at him and he laughed. Within seconds he turned professional.

”We need to check on him and we need to check on that artist. Veerayya stop the car” suddenly he barked.

“what is it boss?”

Muthu showed her the lonely man walking in the deserted street with a wire basket in hand. “isn’t that the cook who brought us juice.? We didn’t thank him paval” he said and Paval smiled and said “you are always right boss”.

“Hello muthaiyan.”Muthu went before him.

“Hi..what.what is it.?”

“The juice was excellent”

“Thank you” he started walking.”No please wait, we need to ask you something.”

“what is it sir? I know nothing”

“I haven’t asked you anthing yet”.

“what is it sir?”

“where was your boss, the night before last?”

“at..at home sir”

“Really muthaiyan?. How many years for helping a murder crime paval?” he asked paval without taking his eyes off the old man.

“My boss is not a murderer. He might be anything but not murderer.”

“what anything?”muthu moved in closer.

“Nothing. You want to pull words from my mouth. There is nothing wrong with him. I will swear on myself that he was at home last night and the night
before that”

“last night?” muthu asked immediately.

“what? You said ..”muthaiya looked confused.

“I only asked where he was the night before last night.”Muthu’s voice chilled his core. Muthaiya looked speechless.

“That was fun.” Muthu leaned back on his seat. Paval gave him a sidewise glance.

“So, this rajesh has motive, ability and no alibi, though his cook would swear for him. And he knows the apartment very well. What do you think?”he turned towards paval.

“What do ‘you’ think sir?”she retorted back.

”Why?”

“No tell me, seriously” she poked him again. Muthu fell silent for a moment and then said.

“He is a potential suspect but”

“But?”

“I was just thinking of that piece of paper from kanagavel’s hand..”muthu said thoughtfully. Paval smiled knowingly.

”Go to the Forensic house veerayya. Let us see what they got on that paper.” he said. In a few minutes they crossed the jammed roads of mylapore. The forensic house sat silently waiting for them, so did kamal, the scientific assistant.

“Yes kamal, any help from your side.?”Muthu asked him impatiently.

“First of all, crime scene – clean.
The paper was an old, to be precise ten years old, the .”
“oh kamal “

“ok..It had a few prints in it , of which we could match one, with the prints taken from the specimen, kanagavel. We also had few semi prints which we tried with our new method, where we do the ridge counts and density measure of the upper radial curve of the”

“Kamal….”Muthu chided.

“Sorry, I just get carried away sometimes. Well, we tried our new method and we can say with 99% assurance that we have two partial finger prints apart from the specimen named kanagavel and they are one female and one male.”

Muthu stared him hard.”Do you mean to say that you can determine sex from fingerprints?”

“yep. That’s just what I said. And believe me we do this without any sleek, posh equipments imported from somewhere. Mind power Muthu..”he smiled.

”yeah yeah”. Muthu hurriedly escaped from him with that crunched piece of paper in a zip lock pouch and the report.

Day 2 : 4.30 PM

Paval and Muthu were having tea in the station.

The table in his room looked like a collage made of crime scene pictures, statements documents and reports. Muthu sat at the corner of his table with small disposable tea cup in one hand and marker in another. He was worried that they hadn’t been able to trace out nandhan still.
Paval was examining the crunched paper with a magnifying glass.

“Boss, it is a novel”

“How do you say.?”

“The words in it. It’s the last part of first five lines of a right side page. The first line has ‘ you have a choice:either’ , the second line says ’take your pick, Dr.’ the third line goes ‘known prenatal test’ and last some ‘lus biopsy’”.

“could be a medical fiction. Just check whether you have a fine print over the top corner with author’s name or book name”

“it’s torn sir,I’ll try mm.. it’s a ‘b’ or ‘t’ and then a space. A ‘c’ and then a big gap”

“what?”

“ It’s torn on that spot.” Muthu thought for a moment and said “Just turn that paper. you must see the book name.”

“What?”

“Yeah, normally if they put author name in the right top they will have the book name in the next left top.”

Paval turned over the paper and smiled at him triumphantly. “boss you are a genius”

“It says‘Muta’. That’s all we have.”

"Up..up.. scoot"
“Go and google medical fictions with starting letter ‘Muta’”.Muthu ordered paval.
She ran across to her table and quickly typed along the necessary keywords in google search bar in her computer.

“It’s Mutation- by” Paval announced exitedly and stopped looked at him and said, ”Robin cook”. She rechecked again with the text in the paper and confirmed it.”

“Hmm.. someone’s favorite author, I presume ”.Muthu said bemusedly.
"And sir, there is a small smudge of blue"she examined more closely and said,"Looks like ..from a stamp pad ink."
"which means?"muthu's eyes twinked in pleasure and anticipation.
"Rental library?"
"you got it. one more clue" He closed one eye, aimed and threw his crushed papercup into the dustbin in far corner.

“Good” he jumped down from the table and went to the board now.

Victim 1: he wrote on the white board
Priya.

He wrote the suspects names around her in a circle and added lines connecting them to priya.

Anu, he boxed and noted on the side
alibi no motive strong ability yes evidence- ?(we are getting there)he thought.
He stared at the name for some time.

“You are staring even at her name?”paval teased him from behind. Muthu smiled and continued boxing another name.

Nandhan:
alibi no motive yes ability yes. Evidence :?
He stopped for a moment and in a flourish he boxed another name

Rajesh:
alibi no motive strong ability yes. Evidence:?
" The evidence we have right now is that piece of paper and the prints in it.
It will hold good for all three suspects and anyone else new for that matter.
we need to dig deep into this one. "

"Let us call Anu and Rajesh tomorrow for a formal enquiry to the station. We might get something new. And we also have to check on the nearest libraries to the apartment. we might just get lucky."
He then went to the board again and wrote
" Victim 2: kanagavel "near priya and looked from a step back.

“What do you think paval.?”

She kept silent. Without looking back he drew another box near rajesh in the suspect circle and wrote down 'X' in it.

She felt the chill.
